What is Domain Authority?
SEO is a tricky beast riddled with complex terminology. One of the most misunderstood terms that is frequently thrown around is Domain Authority.
In short, Domain Authority (or DA) is one of several metrics that search engines use in order to determine the legitimacy and credibility of your site. It directly influences the visibility and rankings of your site and all of its pages. Unfortunately for us, Google does not publish any information about a domain's authority score. However, several tools online (including JSONREPO's own platform) work toward generating an estimate of such a score that is often derived from observing a domain's placement in Google Search Result Pages (SERPs) as well as incoming backlinks.
First off, it is important to understand that DA numbers that are presented by various tools are nothing more than an estimate. Different platforms have their own domain authority formulas, but they all generally present it as a fixed number on a scale of 1-100. The higher the number, the better.
This score is most often calculated based on multiple factors, including the number and quality of links pointing to the website, the diversity of those links, and other site-wide and page-specific metrics. In certain cases, your page's loading speed or its ability to retain backlinks may even affect its overall score.
With that in mind, let us take a look at some of the factors that can affect a domain's authority score:
One of the most significant factors is the quality and quantity of backlinks. Websites with high-quality, relevant backlinks from authoritative sites tend to have higher DA scores. The diversity of these links also plays a role. Having links from various domains rather than just a few can significantly improve a domain's overall score.
This is sort of like a vouch system. When a high-authority domain vouches for your domain, your rank goes up. And in turn, when your domain vouches for another, their score goes up. Links are the main currency of SEO. It has always been, and will always be, the main factor that decides how authoritative your site is.
The link profile of a website includes not just the number of links but also their relevance and authority. For example, a link from a reputable news site or an educational institution can significantly boost your DA compared to links from low-authority or spam/low-effort sites. The reason for this is because if all links were to be treated with equal "weight", abusive actors would then take advantage of that fact to have their content always rank first.
While not directly part of the DA calculation, high-quality content is essential for attracting high-quality backlinks. Well-researched, engaging, and informative content can increase the likelihood of other websites linking to yours.
As an example, imagine publishing content that journalists search for when preparing their articles for major publications. If your content is of high quality, chances are that said journalist might choose to use your site as a sourced link in said publication, further increasing your DA in the process.
Technical aspects such as site speed, mobile-friendliness, and proper indexing by search engines can also indirectly influence your DA. By improving user experience and search engine crawlability, you encourage search engines to rank your content higher.
A higher domain authority can significantly improve your website's chances of ranking higher in SERPs. Search engines like Google consider DA as one of the many signals to determine the relevance and trustworthiness of a website. There is an old saying that is often referenced by SEO experts: "The best place to hide a dead body is page 2 of Google search results".
Understanding your competitors' DA can provide valuable insights into their SEO strategies. By analyzing their link profiles and content strategies, you can identify gaps and opportunities to improve your own website's authority.
A high DA score can enhance your brand's credibility. When potential customers see that your website ranks well and has a strong online presence, they are more likely to trust your brand, which in turn leads to more traffic and sales conversions. At the end of the day, credibility, authority, ranking, etc. are all hand-wavy way of saying: build a strong presence that ranks very high on Google, and the money will follow.
Domain Authority is one of the most, if not the most, powerful metric that provides insights into a website's potential to rank well in search engines. By understanding how DA is calculated and focusing on building high-quality backlinks, optimizing on-page SEO, and creating valuable content, you can significantly improve your website’s authority and subsequently, its overall Google rankings.
